Have you ever wished you had a personal sommelier available day and night? Someone to help navigate that confusing restaurant wine list or recommend new regions and styles specifically tailored to your personal tastes?
Now you can.
Sommo is a user-friendly AI-powered wine companion that puts a personal sommelier right in your pocket. Unlike other wine apps that utilize crowd-sourced data from a pool of users with dubious wine savvy, Sommo simply learns from you and uses that knowledge to shape your wine experience to your personal preferences.
Sommo is the creation of Gökhan Arkan, a London-based software engineer with a love for wine and a background in AI. Late in 2025, he, with support of his wife Ezgi, decided to merge these two passions and create an app that personalizes one’s wine experience rather than relying on aggregate ratings. Sommo is built on a proprietary wine-tuned AI model that learns about your tastes and preferences as you use the app. Designed for wine enthusiasts of all experience levels, the app also emphasizes education, making it handy for beginning enthusiasts and those pursuing wine certification.

Gökhan and Ezgi Arkan
I received premium access to Sommo for evaluation purposes and spent quite a few hours on both the iOS and web platforms exploring its functionality. And there is a lot to explore.
Sommo currently comes with the following tools:
- AI Wine Scanning: Scan by label, restaurant menu, or store shelf
- Wine Cellar & the Wine Wall: Store wines in a virtual cellar representing your physical cellar
- Personal Wine Journal: Enter tasting notes, scores, and details about the wines you try
- Wine Insights: A dashboard of your journal, cellar patterns, preferences, drinking windows, etc.
- Tasting Note Wizard: A form that guides you through tasting notes following the Systematic Approach to Tasting (SAT) used by WSET
- Exam Prep: AI study resources for WSET and CMS
- Wine Atlas: 1,000+ wine regions, including tracking of your personal exploration through tastings
- Your Palate & Taste DNA: Explore and understand your personal tasting preferences
- Menu Scoring: Let AI score every bottle on a restaurant menu
- Wine Tasting Mode: Scan a flight menu or card and get details about each wine
- Sharing Party & Mix Palate: The app’s only “community” feature. Share tastings or ratings with other Sommo users you invite to participate
- The Cellar Book: A summary of Your Wine Life
Let’s dive into a few of the app’s core features.

AI Wine Scanning
The scanning feature uses your phone’s camera to scan a bottle label, restaurant menu, or store shelf. Once scanned, the app attempts to identify the wine and return details about the profile, producer, region, vintage, and drinking window. From there, you can choose to add the wine to your cellar, add purchase or bottle details, enter your personal tasting notes, or ask for pairing suggestions. I was impressed with AI’s accuracy in identifying the wines I scanned despite my attempts to stump it with lesser-known small-batch producers.
Note that a manual entry option is also available for situations where a label is not scannable or identifiable.

Wine Cellar & the Wine Wall
As the name suggests, the wine cellar is where details about your wine collection, including bottle placement, are stored. Your virtual cellar can be viewed as a list or by a 3D representation of your physical cellar(s). Multiple racks of various configurations can be created, and wines moved from one to another as your physical cellar changes.
Note that scanning does not automatically add a wine to your cellar. This allows wines you order at a restaurant or function to be scanned, details displayed, and tasting notes added.

Personal Wine Journal and Tasting Note Wizard
The journal is the app’s core engine. As tasting notes are added to your journal, the app’s AI learns more about your preferences and uses that knowledge to personalize observations and recommendations. Two journal modes are available:
- Quick Entry: Rate the wine and record your thoughts in a few simple sentences
- Advanced Entry: A tasting note wizard that walks you through capturing your notes following the SAT methodology used by the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET)
An interesting feature of the journal is “AI feedback,” which examines your assessment of a wine, outlines where you agree and differ with the grape variety’s known profile, and offers suggestions to improve your tasting skills.

Your Palate & Taste DNA
The “Your Palate” feature analyzes your journal notes and offers insights into your wine buying patterns and palate preferences, offering suggestions for new wine regions to try and bottles to chase. This is a particularly useful feature for those just starting their wine journey or those looking for new styles to explore.
Wine Pairing
Sommo can offer food and wine pairing suggestions in either of two ways:
- Pair with a wine: Select a wine from your cellar and tell the app whether you are looking for general pairing ideas or a pairing based on a specific dish. There is also an option to take specific dietary needs into account (e.g., vegetarian, gluten- or nut-free, etc.).
- Pair with the food: Enter a specific dish you plan to serve and let Sommo offer pairing suggestions based on wines in your cellar. If no viable wine options are available, the app will recommend wines and varietals to look for and purchase.
Study
One of the app’s strengths is the breadth of its study features, including an atlas of wine regions, a comprehensive grape variety index, and learning modules that cover a wide range of beginner- and intermediate-level topics.
For those pursuing a wine certification, a section is included on exam preparation with flashcards, quizzes, and mock exams for WSET levels 1 through 4, and the Court of Master Sommelier’s Introductory Sommelier Certificate.
Author’s Caveat
The author’s website contains a great deal of detailed information about how the app and its AI model work. It also outlines what the app can and cannot do. The author is very candid about the app’s limitations and clearly states that it is not intended to replace the expertise of an experienced sommelier. That said, I have been impressed by the app’s depth of features and personally find it very useful in my own wine journey.
Conclusion
Sommo is a feature-rich application with more functionality than can be covered in a single review. The app is available for download on Apple iOS, Android, and as a browser-based web app. Premium access is available on a month-to-month basis or a very reasonable annual subscription.
Is Sommo for you? Give it a try and see. A fully functioning ad-free version of the app is available for evaluation that will let you scan up to five wines and explore its rich feature set. To try the app for one full month with all features instead of three days, use the Texas Wine Lover promo code TWL. Use the link below with the promo code already entered or enter TWL inside the Sommo app.
