If you’ve been following Texas legislation lately, you know there always seems to be something new coming out of Austin.
Well, here’s one you probably didn’t see coming.
Starting this year, a newly passed Texas law will require wineries across the state to produce at least one “regional heritage blend” that reflects Texas culture. And yes, that means one thing in particular is about to show up in tasting rooms everywhere.
Sweet tea wine.
“This initiative is about honoring the flavors Texans already know and love,” said a spokesperson from the Texas Department of Agriculture. “By incorporating sweet tea into Texas wine, we’re creating a bridge between tradition and innovation…while making sure no one accidentally orders unsweet ever again.”
According to the (very official-sounding) announcement, the goal is to “celebrate iconic Texas flavors and enhance the visitor experience.” The recommended serving style? Ice cold, of course.
For those of us who prefer unsweet iced tea, you might want to double-check what’s in your glass before taking that first sip. You know how that usually goes.
But that’s not all.

In what may be the most “Texas spring” release of the year, one Hill Country winery is already ahead of the trend. For a limited time this month, they’re offering a Bluebonnet-Infused Wine, designed to pair perfectly with wildflower season.
The idea is simple: pick up a bottle, head out to your favorite scenic drive or state park, and enjoy “notes of floral brightness with a hint of roadside photo ops.”
No word yet on whether it pairs better with hiking boots or a camera roll full of bluebonnet pictures, but we’re willing to do the research.
And to help you the best, the new Wine Style of Sweet Tea Wine will be added to the Wines menu in the Plan Your Trip and Texas Wine Lover mobile app.
Between sweet tea wine and bluebonnet infusions, Texas wine country is definitely leaning into its roots this year.
We’ll let you decide if that’s a good thing.
