The wait is finally over! On October 28th, East Texas got a major upgrade as The Rusty Spur Winery and Bistro officially opened the doors to its beautiful new tasting room. For fans of family owners, Sherry Key and Morgan Weems, this grand opening isn’t just about a change of address. It’s about watching the mother-daughter duo’s dream of bringing 100% Texas wine, with a genuine Western twist, to Nacogdoches to reach its fullest potential.
We recently traveled to Nacogdoches with a small group of friends for the opening of their new tasting room. Stepping into the tasting room felt like stepping into a sprawling, rustic ranch house, one dedicated to the finer things in life. Gone are the days of their smaller downtown location. The new tasting room is expansive, thoughtfully designed, and instantly inviting. Sherry and Morgan chose to move the business from the nearby city to a beautiful, wooded, and remote eighty-acre piece of East Texas land, just west of Nacogdoches.

The ambiance perfectly captures the “Western Twist” the winery has been famous for. Exposed wooden beams, comfortable seating, and subtle touches of cowboy memorabilia create a welcoming, relaxed environment that encourages you to slow down and savor the moment. There is plenty of space now to gather friends, settle in for an afternoon, host an event, or enjoy the experience with a glass or bottle of wine from their patio located just off the main tasting and dining area. It truly elevates the experience, giving the excellent Texas wines the beautiful setting they deserve.

At The Rusty Spur, every bottle of wine and food item from the menu tells a Texas Story. They still offer two different tastings, one with three wines and one with five wines, for a set price. Since I visited The Rusty Spur in May of this year, I chose to taste the four wines that have been released since my last visit.
- 2024 Blanc du Bois (Dry)
- 2023 Mourvèdre Rosé (Dry)
- 2023 Dolcetto
- 2023 Mourvèdre
All were very good, and I took home a bottle of the Blanc du Bois and Dolcetto. They currently offer a total of 13 wines. A list of the other 10 wines can be found in the Texas Wine Lover blog post I wrote on May 9th of this year.

It wouldn’t be The Rusty Spur without its amazing bistro, and the expanded kitchen is delivering amazing food items. Their menu items, all named with clever Western references, now include Panini sandwiches, sliders (made with grass-fed beef that Morgan’s husband raises), charcuterie boards, flatbread pizza, and a couple of desserts that are made specially each week.

A major highlight of our visit was purchasing a bottle of my favorite Rusty Spur wine, 2023 Granate, for the table prior to ordering our food. Granate is a dry red blend of Cabernet, Cab Franc, Malbec, and Tempranillo. It won a Silver Medal at the 2025 Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo International Wine Competition. It was definitely enjoyed by all!
I opted for the Ned Pepper Panini after looking through the extensive menu. It paired very well with my glass of Granate. The bistro menu ensures The Rusty Spur is truly a full destination. Not just a place to stop by for a glass of great Texas wine, but a place you can stay for the afternoon.
After our visit, it’s clear that the new tasting room at The Rusty Spur Winery and Bistro is more than just another new building; it’s a celebration of local passion, quality Texas wine, and the warm hospitality that Sherry and Morgan bring to this new endeavor. If you are looking for a unique and memorable outing, hitch up your wagon and head to the new Rusty Spur Winery and Bistro tasting room. Cheers!!!
