The Texas Wine Auction Foundation recently awarded a “Sustainable Future for Texas Wines” Grant to Dr. Colleen Myles from Texas State University. Funds from the grant will be utilized to support essential operating costs associated with the “Sustainability in Texas Wine” project, specifically the “One Block Challenge” (1BC TX) initiative in Texas. Dr. Myles will lead the project, along with several other key partners in the Texas wine industry.
“I am so excited to work with the Texas wine community to build upon and improve sustainability practices across the state. Through these collective efforts, we continue to build capacity for innovation, resilience, and excellence in this vibrant industry. My team and I sincerely appreciate the Texas Wine Auction Foundation’s generous support of this work!” – Dr. Colleen Myles, Texas State University
The Texas wine industry is a vital part of the state’s economy, contributing over $24 billion annually. The One Block Challenge (1BC TX) initiative, inspired by the global organization Regenerative Viticulture Foundation, aims to promote sustainable practices within the wine industry. Wine growers are encouraged to dedicate a single vineyard block to regenerative practices for one year. Regenerative agricultural practices are designed to improve soil structure, increase biodiversity, reduce chemical inputs, and conserve water, all of which will benefit the production of quality wine in Texas. 1BC TX is community-driven, built on trust and collaboration, and integrates research, outreach, and student training with significant educational value.
“Dr. Myles’s leadership in sustainability embodies the innovative and collaborative spirit of the Texas wine community. Through the One Block Challenge, she is equipping growers with practical tools and knowledge to implement regenerative practices and build a stronger, more sustainable future for Texas wine.” – Valerie Elkins, Co-Founder, Texas Wine Auction
Wine producers and industry affiliates are organizing the “1BC TX,” launched on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, via a workshop and field day at Ab Astris Winery located in Stonewall, TX. For more information on how to become involved, click here.
