Quite often, a boutique winery starts making and selling its wine before they have a tasting room. Then, when the tasting room is opened, they have dedicated customers and are ready to greet new wine lovers. Terra Trails Winery is one of those wineries, and they have now opened their tasting room in Johnson City. The winemaker behind the award-winning wines is Jason Guerrero, who we are proud to feature as this month’s Winemaker Profile.
- What did you do before becoming a winemaker?
Many things! I was a hamburger flipper, locksmith, electrician, video game store manager, and for the longest portion, wearing many hats at a financial institution.
- What is the toughest challenge about being a winemaker in Texas?
Logistics. Bringing all pieces together with a variable product like wine makes for a challenge every vintage.
- Is winemaking an art or a science or both?
It has to be both, but the majority is art.
- What is your favorite food and wine pairing?
Ahh, smoked tri-tip with a fire-kissed crust paired with a bold Texas Tempranillo…for starters.
- If you didn’t make wine, what would you do?
I enjoy designing and building, so I’d probably be involved in construction.
- What first attracted you to winemaking and how long have you been doing it?
In my early 20’s, I went to my first curated wine dinner. I’ve been working towards it ever since.
- What is the most common question you are asked as a winemaker?
“Is it hard to make the wine?” I say no, but it takes passion and commitment.
- After a long day in the winery or vineyard, what do you do?
I love to sit outside with the fan on and enjoy a wide Texas sunset, preferably with the right wine for the season.
- What’s the greatest part about being a winemaker?
Bringing joy and laughter to others through my work; it’s deeply rewarding.
- What is your winemaking philosophy, that is, what are you trying to achieve with your wines?
To honor the grape grower and the customer by producing quality wines that represent Texas proudly.
