Sometimes a vineyard starts growing grapes and later starts making wine from those grapes. That is the story with Diamond Vineyards and Lisa Kennelly. The Fredericksburg vineyard and now the winery have been a labor of love for Lisa first tending to the vineyard and then starting the winemaking three years later. We enjoyed tasting Lisa’s wines and look forward to seeing the future with Lisa Kennelly and Diamond Vineyards, our Grower Profile for this month.
- What did you do before growing grapes?
I’m a Somm and have worked in just about every aspect of the wine industry: importer, retailer, caterer, distributor, service, and even on TV /radio.
- When did you first plant your vineyard, and how many acres did you start with?
I planted 7,000+ vines in 2018.
- How many acres do you have today, and what grapes are planted?
Diamond Vineyards is 12 acres of Tempranillo, Tannat, and Mourvèdre.
- Do you farm any other crops? And if so, what?
Just beautiful grapes.
- What first attracted you to growing grapes?
Transforming my rugged ranch into a site that produces wine of distinct character. I’ve relished the opportunities to explore wine regions around the world and just knew my property could be one.
- What is the toughest challenge about being a grape grower in Texas?
Texas weather! There is so much out of our control.
- If you didn’t grow grapes, what would you do?
I have long enjoyed the wine industry – surely there is more for me to do. Perhaps I’d move into lobbying.
- After a long day in the vineyard, what do you like to do?
Sit atop my hill overlooking the vines with a glass of wine and friends.
- What’s the best part about being a grape grower?
Both nurturing each vine and the peace of being in the vineyard and seeing how the struggles build structure and character. (I suppose for me and my fruit.)
- What advice would you give someone wanting to start a vineyard today?
Reach out to others – you’d be amazed at the wisdom, help, and support in our community!
