Recently there has been more interest in wines from Georgia. No, not the state of Georgia, but the country of Georgia. So, when I learned there was a town in Texas called Turkey in the Texas High Plains, I thought there would be the same confusion with the country of Turkey. The key question is, is there wine in Turkey, Texas? There is!
Even though the town of Turkey has a population of roughly 400 people, there is a winery called Turkey Creek Winery. The owner of the winery is Brit Petitt, daughter of Jackie and JonAnn Welch of J Welch Farms which is located in Victoria, Texas. The sister wineries are located a long distance from each other with one being in the High Plains and the other being in southeast Texas. Turkey Creek Winery opened in April 2022.
I was going to drive a long way from Houston to Lubbock to attend this year’s TWGGA Grape Camp. Since I had extra time, I looked in the Texas Wine Lover mobile app to see if there were any wineries that I hadn’t visited before. That’s when I found Turkey Creek Winery.
I arrived in Turkey and the first thing I noticed was I had no cell service. I learned later that Turkey is AT&T land and not Verizon which is what I have.
The front of the winery has a gift shop much like a general store with many different items for sale. This no doubt helps the local residents with their shopping. An L-shaped tasting bar is up a few short steps followed by multiple tables. I sat at the tasting bar and perused the menu.
Besides a variety of their wines, they also provide beer and wine slushies. If you are hungry, food is offered beyond the traditional charcuterie with sandwiches, tacos, pizza, and cheesecake.
These were the wines available at the time of my visit:
- High Cotton (Sauvignon Blanc)
- Prosperity (Pinot Grigio)
- Bella Blanc (Pinot Blanc)
- Joker’s Blend (Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec)
- Cash Cow (Petite Sirah)
- High Maintenance (Merlot bourbon barrel)
- Poker Face (Cabernet Sauvignon)
- Giddy Up (Tempranillo)
- Painted Lady (Sweet red blackberry)
- Southern Belle (sweet rosé strawberry watermelon)
- Cowgirl (sweet white apple peach)
- Senorita Sangria (sweet peach blackberry)
- Full Tassle (sparkling Riesling)
Tasting are done by selecting four wines and they are served at one time on a wood board with information about each wine. Since J Welch Farms is a sister winery, the same wines are available there. The wines are made by the custom crush facility of Thirsty Mule Winery & Vineyard.
If you are in the High Plains northeast of Lubbock or in Victoria, add the winery to your personal Trip in the Texas Wine Lover mobile app.
