Llano Estacado Winery, nestled in the heart of Texas, stands as a testament to the resilience, innovation, and spirit of Texas winemaking. Established in 1976 in southeast Lubbock County, a region that was a dry county at the time, the winery has defied odds and expectations, blossoming into a beacon of premium wines in the Lone Star State.
A Humble Beginning
The inception of Llano Estacado Winery is woven into a narrative of academic curiosity, a profound passion for viticulture, and a pioneering spirit. The winery’s genesis can be traced back to the mid-1950s when Robert Reed, a horticulture professor at Texas Tech University, planted discarded vine cuttings in his backyard. This act of curiosity and experimentation sowed the seeds for one of Texas’ most esteemed wineries.
In 1973, Reed, alongside his colleague Clinton McPherson, established a wine lab at the university. This marked the onset of a formal journey into winemaking. With the backing of a group of investors, Llano Estacado was founded in 1976, producing 600 cases of its inaugural vintage in 1977.

Mark Hyman
Growth and Innovation
Under the adept leadership of President Mark Hyman, the winery has witnessed exponential growth. Since Hyman’s induction into the team in 1994, sales have more than tripled, catapulting the winery’s reputation to unprecedented heights. The winery’s trajectory of innovation and expansion is also attributed to the concerted efforts of a dedicated team including Greg Bruni, Bill Freidhof, and Kristi Ward.

Jason Centanni, the Executive Winemaker, epitomizes the winery’s ethos of nurturing talent and crafting exquisite wines. Centanni’s journey, from a harvest cellar worker in 2005 to the esteemed position he holds today, underscores the winery’s commitment to excellence. His approach marries tradition with innovation, a synergy that has been pivotal in elevating Llano Estacado to a bastion of premium wines in Texas.
A Legacy of Quality
Llano Estacado’s reputation for quality is not serendipitous but the fruit of an unwavering commitment to excellence. The winery’s accolades, including the coveted “Double Gold” Medal at the San Francisco Fairs International Wine Competition in 1986, are a testament to the meticulous craftsmanship and innovation that characterize every bottle of wine produced.
A Bright Future
As Llano Estacado stands on the cusp of a promising future, it is poised to augment its legacy and influence, transcending the borders of Texas. Matt Bostick, a certified specialist in wine and certified Sommelier, is at the forefront of this endeavor, championing the global recognition of Texas wines. The winery’s commitment to innovation, quality, and catering to the evolving preferences of the consumer is the quill that will inscribe the subsequent chapters of its illustrious history.
Llano Estacado Winery, with its roots embedded deep in the Texan soil, is not just a winery; it is a legacy. A legacy born from humble beginnings, nurtured by innovation, defined by quality, and destined for global acclaim. As connoisseurs savor every sip of Llano Estacado’s exquisite wines, they partake in a journey through time, a narrative of resilience, and a story that is as rich, complex, and enchanting as the wines themselves.
Viviano is one of the best, if not the best ever Texas wines ever. There was an early vintage in the 2010’s that knocked my socks off (in a good way.) I have a couple of 2015’s that I have to look forward to!
Viviano is a great wine!
Thank you for the wonderful article Jeff, you’re very kind.
And “yes”… VIVIANO is pretty darn special. Hope to see you Wednesday evening.
