Siren’s Call Winery

Let us set the scene, shall we? Imagine you’re reclining on the beach. It’s a warm, cloudless summer day. A gentle breeze wafts across the waves. You dig your toes into the warm sand and snuggle deeper into your beach chair. Closing your eyes, you listen to the cry of gulls overhead (hopefully not directly overhead) and the sound of the waves caressing your soul as they wash the shore just a few feet from your toes. Are you with me so far? Good. Now, what would make this moment perfect?

What about a delicious glass of chilled peach wine? Or maybe a frozen slushy made from cherry wine? If you’re on Padre Island that is exactly what you need. And you can only get them at Siren’s Call Winery.

Located on North Padre Island just off Park Road 22, Siren’s Call Winery is owned by Pam and Byron Conner. Both Pam and Byron had long shared a love for wine. After retiring from more than thirty years as a pharmacist, Pam decided to learn more about the wine industry. Enrolling in Grayson College she soon became part of a small group of like-minded women known as the “Texas Wine Sisters” (I’ll leave it as an exercise for the reader to name the others), and after having graduated from Grayson in 2018 she spent time working at Eden Hill Vineyard and In Contrada Vineyard. Those experiences convinced her to “heed the call” and make wines under her own label.

Being located on Padre Island, Pam saw an opportunity to service a unique niche market. Obtaining a permit in July 2021, she began making and offering fruit wines as she fine-tuned her craft. It was not long before she realized she was hooked. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Heeding the call once again, the Conners took the next step and opened the tasting room in June 2023. Siren’s Call Winery offers a wide range of fruit wines and a few dry wines to sun-seekers, beachgoers, and visitors to the island. All of her wines are made right there on Padre Island. As Pam puts it, there’s “love in all our wines and magic from the sea.”

I tried several of the wines while visiting the tasting room and was very impressed. These are not just heavily sweetened fruit juices. Each had good body and structure with an aromatic nose, lush fruit, and good phenolics. Two of my particular favorites were the Charming Cherry and Passionate Peach. A bottle of both came home with us.

And for those who are planning to enjoy a day in the sun and don’t want to carry glass on the beach, most wines are available in beach-friendly plastic bottles. You can also purchase stemless stainless steel wine cups.

And for a unique tasting experience, don’t forget to try one of their frozen slush wines. These are available by the glass or 500ml plastic beach-friendly pouch and come in Badass Blueberry, Bangin Blackberry, Charming Cherry, Mango-Peach Bellini, Watermelon, Sangria, Pina Colada, and Strawberry Daiquiri. Note that only three alternating slush wines are available each day.

No wine club is available at this time, but we can only hope that will change in the near future.
