My wife and I just completed a big renovation at our home in Spring, TX, and rather than live in the dust and chaos we decided to rent a house in Tomball for the duration of our renovation. Living in Old Town Tomball gave us the opportunity to get away and have some new experiences while still being close enough to manage our renovation project. Tomball has seen recent growth in businesses with a focus on Texas wine and is quickly becoming a destination for those that enjoy Texas wine. Wine is often needed during big home projects, so everything lined up perfectly.

The Bluebonnet Tasting Room
Our first stop in Tomball was The Bluebonnet Tasting Room. The Bluebonnet is situated in a beautifully renovated cottage right off Main Street. They offer a rotating selection of Texas wines available to guests as flights, by glass, or by bottle. During my visit, the Bluebonnet offered 16 Texas wines, and they were just in the process of rolling out an updated wine list giving guests some new wines to try. Guests can build their own wine tasting by selecting four of any of their wines. I tasted Come and Drink it Rosé, Lost Draw Cellars Kindred red blend, English Newsom Cellars Tempranillo, and Duchman Family Winery Aglianico.

Rachel & Craig Moore
After my visit, I got to catch up with owners Rachel and Craig Moore. Rachel shared that she and Craig used to take frequent trips to the Hill Country to try new Texas wineries and wines, but after becoming heavily involved in dog rescue these trips became much more difficult. They thought, “Wouldn’t it be cool if we could taste a variety of Texas wines under one roof, without leaving Tomball?”, and so The Bluebonnet Tasting Room was born. They host a wide variety of fun events, offer complimentary charcuterie/small bites on the weekends, and mimosa flights on Sundays. They also partner with local artists giving them a space to display their work throughout the tasting room.

Empty Glass and Newsom Vineyards
It’s a bit funny that I have been to the Newsom Vineyards tasting room in Comfort numerous times but never to their Tomball location which is much closer to my home. It was finally time to fix that situation. Newsom Vineyards has a tasting bar nestled right inside of the well-known Empty Glass wine bar in Tomball. They offer a full selection of Newsom Vineyards wines, available in flights of five wines, by the glass, and by the bottle. During my visit I tried their Albariño, skin fermented Pinot Grigio, Malbec, Tannat, and Syrah. All well-made and very enjoyable as always. I brought home a bottle of their 2016 Malbec.

Newsom Vineyards
If you need some excellent barbeque to go along with your Newsom wines, Tejas Chocolate + Barbecue offers several Newsom wines that pair well with their barbecue.

Thirsty Bee Meadery
I was overdue for re-visit to the Thirsty Bee Meadery and I’m glad that I had to chance to visit them again. Thirsty Bee Meadery offers a wide variety of draft and bottled meads that they make right there on site. I tried a flight of three of their draft meads: the OG traditional draft mead, Rosemary’s Lemon (rosemary and lemon metheglin), and Tomball Team (black tea metheglin). All were flavorful and refreshing in our summer heat. If you’re interested in trying something a little different be sure to check out Thirsty Bee Meadery.

Tomball H-E-B Texas Wines
A Texas wine visit to Tomball isn’t complete without a stop at the Tomball H-E-B. Yes, H-E-B. The Tomball store is the home of John Harvey, aka Johnny Wine! John keeps the widest variety of Texas wines I’ve seen in a supermarket including a lot of bottles I haven’t seen outside of their home winery. I ran into Johnny Wine on a regular H-E-B trip, and it was great to finally meet him in person. BTW, John Harvey is also the Texas Wine Lover Restaurant Ambassador working to encourage restaurants to offer Texas wines.
Some of us wine enthusiasts are also coffee enthusiasts. If you fall into that category, Honor Society Coffee Co. is the place to be in Tomball for awesome coffee. If you’re a beer fan, I highly recommend Paradigm Brewing Company. I’m going to miss our time in Tomball, and we’re already planning on revisiting some of our new favorite Tomball spots soon.
