Vijay and Akhil Reddy
If you’re already a part of the wine industry in Texas, you’ve certainly heard of Reddy Vineyards. With over 25 years of striving for perfection in the vineyard, the Reddy’s not only grow high-quality grapes, they also have a full winemaking facility for their own label and help make wines for other labels. If you’ve ever dreamed of having your own wine, now is the perfect time.
Maybe you want a wine created for your family or a special occasion? Or perhaps you’re a winery that already has your own label, but you need more inventory to sell? Maybe you’re an established winemaker looking to source more quality Texas-grown grapes? The important thing to know is that Reddy Vineyards can help fulfill all of these needs!
Vijay Reddy holds a Ph.D. in Soil & Plant Science. He has farmed cotton, peanuts, wheat, milo, and produce since the 1970s. He also ran a soil and plan consulting laboratory for over 20 years. Since 1997, the focus has been on growing wine grapes. Fifteen years ago, Akhil joined the family business and recently has taken the role of CEO for the vineyard. He is a cosmetic dentist and entrepreneur in the Dallas area who couldn’t resist the draw of the family business. In 2018, Akhil launched their estate winery, and the focus has included crafting world-class wines and extending their expertise to their custom crush clients. Reddy Vineyards Executive Winemaker, Lood Kotze brings two decades of experience from South Africa to California and is extremely passionate about crafting fine wine. Today, the vineyard is the second largest in Texas.

If you’re not already in the wine business, let’s dig into Custom Crush. This is the utilization of a winemaking facility for the creation of a wine from start to finish, or for just a single phase of the winemaking process. In the case of Reddy Vineyards, the services start in the vineyard with top-quality grapes which can be transported through the vineyard to the winery building. This close proximity allows for true grape-to-bottle processing services by Reddy. Actually, there is a large cost savings in trucking and logistics with the production facility located in the vineyard.
With nearly 40 different grape varieties being grown, there are plenty of choices for your wine. And Reddy Vineyards is flexible, so grapes from another vineyard can be brought into the winery to create the exact wine you want. The modern equipment and experienced winemaking staff can ensure a finished bottle you will love.
Reddy Vineyards offers a range of services either a la carte or bundled together for a complete package. Whether you need finished bulk wine, private label production, wine storage, wine analysis, barrel storage, bottling, legal compliance, freshly picked grapes, grape pressing, or oak treatment, arrangements can be made to get you what you need. Many wineries across the state who purchase Reddy fruit often use the winery facility to juice their white grapes to reduce skin contact that would typically occur during the transportation of the fruit.
So why should you consider Reddy Vineyards for your winemaking needs? Akhil admits by creating their own label in 2018, the boutique winery gives them an intimate understanding of the winemaking process. Akhil says, “Reddy Vineyards has been in business for 26 years, and it has been an incredible journey. Throughout this time, we have developed a deep appreciation for the craft of grape growing. Our own boutique winery has allowed us to better understand each client’s needs. We currently have close to 400 acres of planted vines in our vineyard with 38 varietals in the Texas High Plains AVA. Our team has the expertise and equipment necessary to create top-quality wines from crushing the grapes, fermenting to wine, aging for complexity, and bottling to be sold. We are also able to offer competitive pricing as the winery is located directly on the vineyard cutting out shipping and logistics costs as well as increasing quality. This is a piece of what sets us apart. We have the luxury of working with the fruit we grow and move it just yards down the path to the production facility. Many winemakers have the challenge of transporting their grapes hundreds of miles and we don’t have that issue to overcome. The benefit holds true for our own boutique label but also for the wineries who purchase grapes from us.”

As the 2023 harvest is well underway across the state, Reddy still has a little tonnage available of Tannat and Montepulciano grapes. And they have the capacity to handle more custom crush this season. Of course, it’s a good idea to reach out as soon as possible to make arrangements for the 2024 vintage, even if you’re not quite ready to think that far ahead as most of Reddy Vineyards grapes are contracted on a long-term basis.
Just remember, whether you’re making final decisions for 2023 or you’re planning for the future, Reddy Vineyards can help in the process.
