Amie and her mom (@2003)
My mom is one of my heroes. I’m not just saying that because it’s nearly Mother’s Day and I don’t have a gift for her. It’s the truth. She is a strong woman. With a strong work ethic. She taught me to be creative. To work hard. To be me, without worrying about what anyone else thinks. And did I mention working hard? But I taught her a thing or two as well. Like how to drink wine!
We didn’t have wine in our home when I was growing up. But in 2018, when I decided to open a tasting room in Fredericksburg, my mom stepped up to help. She would drive over three hours one way to help me pour wine and wash glasses on the weekends. Nearly every weekend for a year! And when we weren’t busy, I started to teach her about wine. Now, she likes a crisp, slightly sweet Moscato d’Asti, or a bold Texas wine, especially Tempranillo. She doesn’t love the 2021 Texas Montepulciano that I made (her own daughter!), but she loves the rosé I made from 2022 Pinot Noir. So, this Mother’s Day, raise a glass of wine with your own mom and celebrate life – and all you have taught each other.

Many Texas wineries offer Mother’s Day weekend discounts, food pairings, live music, and more. Check with your favorite local spot or use the Texas Wine Lover app to plan a day trip or a weekend getaway. As for me, I’ll be visiting Lubbock for the weekend but will raise a glass of Texas Tempranillo to my mom.
