Coordinates Vineyards is owned by brothers Austin and Mahlon Kerr and the tasting room is located in Fredericksburg. The winery opened in 2021.
Austin Kerr has worked around the world in the wine industry and the name Coordinates Vineyards comes from his trip to South Africa while sourcing wines for China. They were traveling the area outside of Stellenbosch trying to find a sixth-generation family vineyard where they found themselves lost and road signs were non-existent. They called the winemaker and he replied, “When you’re this far off the beaten track, you just have to go by the coordinates.”
They brought that philosophy to Coordinates Vineyards because finding places so remote, unique, and special, that you just can’t get there without the coordinates. I can relate to that with Texas Wine Lover because over the years I have visited some Texas wineries that would not have been found without a GPS.
The Coordinates Vineyards tasting room is located in what was originally an 1880 blacksmith shop on Main Street in Fredericksburg. We visited the winery at the end of the day and as is common at that time of the day, the women decided to enjoy the couch in the tasting room in front of the fireplace while Lucho, Gloria’s brother, and I did a wine tasting.
We met Austin Kerr who explained the story of Coordinates Vineyards. In fact, the Coordinates Vineyards sign on the outside of the building said 30° 27’ 05” N, 98° 86’ 62” W. We were told those are the GPS coordinates for the tasting room in Fredericksburg.
These are the wines that were available during our tasting:
- 2021 Sauvignon Blanc (Stellenbosch)
- 2021 Chardonnay (Stellenbosch)
- 2021 Chenin Blanc (Stellenbosch)
- 2019 Pinotage (Stellenbosch)
- 2018 Shiraz (Stellenbosch)
As you can tell, the wines are from South Africa from which they have been working with over seven years. That doesn’t mean Texas wines is not in the tasting room as they realize they are in the Texas Hill Country. These are the Texas wines that were available during our visit:
- 2019 Mourvèdre – Texas High Plains
- 2019 Mourvèdre Rosé – Texas High Plains

We recommend visiting Coordinates Vineyards the next time you are in Fredericksburg for some fantastic South African wines and Texas wines.
