Barons Creek Granbury Wine Room, located on the scenic square of beautiful downtown Granbury, was opened in March of 2020 and is the third of four Barons Creek properties owned by Marc and Marta Chase. The Granbury location is managed by Michael Igo, a familiar name to those who follow the Texas wine scene. Other Barons Creek properties are located in Fredericksburg, McKinney, and Georgetown.
Libby and I visited the Granbury wine room in the early afternoon on a hot and humid Sunday in July. The front entrance is flanked by small tables for couples who want to enjoy their experience al fresco. Not being gluttons for punishment in the heat, we chose to avail ourselves of the indoor air conditioning. There were several small groups seated around the room but plenty of seating was still available. A large wooden bar dominates one side of the room while cozy couches and chairs are scattered around the other side for small group seating. A table is also available for mid-size groups. An open-space second floor with added seating wraps around three walls overlooking the lower level. The upper floor also serves as an art gallery where local artists’ works are displayed.
Barons Creek sources grapes from locations in Texas, California, Washington, and Spain. Currently, only two 100% Texas wines are offered – a Merlot and a red blend called “Boots.” All other domestic wines are pressed and fermented as close to the harvest site as possible under the personal direction of winemaker D. Russell Smith. The remaining steps including clarification, aging, blending, and bottling are completed under Russell’s direction at Barons Creek’s Fredericksburg site. Spanish still wines are processed in Spain and shipped to Fredericksburg for finishing and bottling. Russell owns vineyards in Spain and crosses the pond to manage those operations as well. This is a busy man!
Currently, Barons Creek offers the following two wine tasting options:
Option #1 – A mixed flight of five dry whites and reds:
- Sauvignon Blanc
- Reserve Chardonnay
- Rosé
- Barbera
- Merlot
Option #2 – A flight of five dry reds:
- Velvet – Malbec/Cab Franc blend
- Hippo – 100% Grenache
- Zinfandel
- Boots
- Le Baron – Petit Verdot/Petite Sirah blend
Libby and I decided to each try a different option and share so we could sample all the wines. All were very enjoyable, but my personal favorites were the Barbera from California and the Texas Merlot. As Joe, our tasting guide poured each wine he took the time to provide background, tasting notes, and even a few personal opinions. Before long we were “deep in the weeds” discussing the characteristics and nuances of each pour. It is always a pleasure to talk with someone who knows their product and enjoys sharing their knowledge and passion with others.
Barons Creek also offers a food paired flight for an additional charge as well as a charcuterie board that would satisfy most appetites. Numerous events are held each month including Mimosa Sundays, Name That Tune Bingo, and wine club dinners. Check the calendar on the Granbury website for dates and times.
Barons Creek currently offers the following four wine club options. Club packages are shipped four times per year.
- Bronze – 3 bottles, 15% off all purchases
- Silver – 4 bottles, 20% off all purchases
- Gold – 6 bottles, 25% off all purchases
- Platinum -12 bottles, 30% off all purchases
Barons Creek Wine Room is a perfect addition to the downtown square and may provide just the break one needs while on a busy shopping spree in the beautiful town of Granbury.
