We have known Fly Gap Winery’s owner Brock Estes for over ten years. He was associated with Mason, Texas, but when we first met him, he actually lived about ten minutes from us in Houston. He would make the trek often to Mason and now lives there permanently.
Brock made his small production wines for years at various wineries and then at a location outside of Mason where he was building his winery in a house and surrounding buildings. Now with Mason becoming more of a destination, Brock has opened Fly Gap Winery & Dank Lounge right off the main courthouse square in Mason.
We visited Fly Gap Winery when we were last in Mason. Take note of the address and look at a map when you first visit to know exactly where the winery is located. Brock is still in the process of remodeling the tasting room and signs were not available when we visited so it took a little time to find it.
We met Brock again in the very large tasting room. The building was originally an old feed store and Brock has the space to do many things with it. On one side of the room is the tasting bar and the other side has a number of benches and tables.
There were four of us and we sat in one of the large benches along with Brock’s girlfriend, and Brock began our tasting. These are the wines that were available at the time of our visit:
- Alicante Bouschet Pét-Nat
- 2020 Vox Populi (80% Tempranillo, 15% Alicante Bouschet, 5% Sangiovese) – Texas Hill Country
- 2020 Lighthouse (Sangiovese) – Kubacak Vineyards, Texas High Plains
- 2020 Parrvedré (Mourvèdre) – Parr Vineyards, Mason County
- 2020 Tr4nsc3nd4tion (Alicante Bouschet) – Gotneaux Creek Vineyard, Texas Hill Country
Brock has always made good wines and his latest lineup has upped that game even more. Some of the wine bottles have glow-in-the-dark labels, and the tasting room’s tables have black lights below making the label and wax capsules glow while tasting.
Fly Gap Winery’s tasting room is in the middle of the multiple store building and the storefront adjacent will be a future brewery giving even more reason to visit Mason.
Everyone enjoyed our visit to Fly Gap Winery and we look forward to seeing the changes when we visit again.
