Reddy Vineyards has long been known as one of the pioneering and premier grape growers in Texas led by Dr. Vijay Reddy who started growing grapes in 1997. Since 2019, the vineyard started making its estate wines from its 38 different varietals planted and Reddy Vineyards has been making award-winning wines.
Reddy Vineyards, the winery, can do tastings by appointment only and upon a recent trip to the Texas High Plains, I made sure to make an appointment. Actually, I was to have an appointment back in October 2020, but by the time I was there, a big snowstorm decided to visit too and caused businesses to close, including canceling my appointment. This time was at the end of April so I had a better chance to visit!
I arrived at the winery along with Gail Day, co-owner of Buena Suertes Vineyards, and we met owner Akhil Reddy and winemaker Lood Kotze. We were standing around talking and soon Dr. Vijay Reddy arrived to join in the fun. We then started enjoying some of the Texas wines.
We tasted a couple of white wines at the tasting bar and then went to an adjacent table where they had a number of wines set up. Part of those wines was a fantastic four bottle vertical of their Field Blend, 2017-2020. Since it is a field blend, it all depends on how the grapes grew that year with what Mother Nature decided to impart on them. Because of that, you could definitely taste the difference between years.
While doing the tastings, I was standing next to Dr. Reddy and he commented how the winery is Akhil’s project. In fact, Vijay sells some of his grapes to the winery. Speaking of grapes, surrounding the winery are 80 acres of grapes which are part of Akhil’s vineyard.
We then went into the barrel room to do some barrel tastings. We tasted a 2020 Tempranillo from the barrel which should be bottled later this summer. Reddy Vineyards will be celebrating a 25h anniversary this year and because of that, they have a wine they are making which is a 2020 Anniversary blend. Oh, I can’t wait for this one to be available!
Our visit to Reddy Vineyards was enlightening and there is no doubt they have a place in the Texas winery world for years to come.
