Always on the lookout for new local wineries, DeepRoots Vineyards caught my eye when I saw they had live concerts for my type of genre. The winery is located in Plantersville and is owned by two lifelong friends Robert Fuchs and Dean Dickschat along with their respective spouses Ginna and Joy plus cousin Keith.
We visited one Saturday on a beautiful spring day. Since Texas 249 has been extended from Tomball to Plantersville, it makes for an easy drive from Houston to the winery located right off 249.
Once you make it past the winery’s entrance, you follow the road going by buildings of the previous dairy farm. We wondered where the winery was and eventually when the road ended at a barn, we knew we were there next to the newly planted vineyard.
This history of DeepRoots Vineyards is a pretty cool story starting with a dairy farm in the 1940s in Houston itself, the winery Barnhill Vineyards in Anna, Texas, and the start of the winery on the dairy farm in Plantersville.
The barn has a tasting bar to the left, a stage to the right, and plenty of tables inside and outside in the open air of the covered porch. We decided to sit out on the porch, and we did a tasting of their wines. These are the wines that were available upon our visit:
- Viognier NV
- Sparkling white NV
- 2018 Malbec
- 2019 Mourvèdre
- 2016 Alicante Bouschet
- 2018 Muscat
- Desert Sun
- Crooked Creek (sweet blush)
- Silky Chocolate Red
It was difficult to tell vintages for some wines either because there was no vintage listed or the bottles had just arrived and were still unlabeled. The primary focus of the winery appears to be the live music events as there is no production of wines at the winery and a custom crush winery from Ivanhoe is used to make the wines.
Speaking of concerts, the lineup of cover bands is excellent for my style of music with bands covering artists such as Foreigner, Fleetwood Mac, Genesis, Journey, Eagles, and more. While sipping on the tasting, I could imagine the barn lit up with the bands playing and the wine flowing. I can’t wait to return to listen to a concert!
