A winery makes wine and a vineyard grows grapes! Sometimes a winery can have a vineyard where they get their grapes from, but often a vineyard in Texas only grows grapes and then sells them to wineries.

Untamed Wine Estates

Untamed Wine Estates outside

Wineries are opening quite often in the Texas Hill Country and one of the most recent is Untamed Wine Estates owned by Dane and Mckenzie Sanvido located right off the famed 290 between Johnson City and Hye.

I visited on a Saturday around noon and was very pleasantly surprised by the facility with plenty of seating, a long tasting bar, and a noticeable pizza oven in the rear. Seated at a table I enjoyed a tasting of the wines while using a palate cleanser similar to a very light breadstick. I could have just eaten those as a side dish for a meal.

There is a choice of four wine flights:

  • Chilled Flight for those that enjoy white wine
    • Fumé Blanc
    • Steen
    • Chardonnay
    • Cabernet Franc Rosé
  • Grand Flight for those that enjoy red wines
    • Grenache Rosé
    • Grenache Noir
    • Malbec
    • Cabernet Franc
  • New Releases for those that enjoy a variety
    • Grenache Blanc
    • Sangiovese Rosé
    • Grenache Noir
    • Malbec
  • Reserve Flight for those looking for an experience
    • Blanc de Blancs
    • Chardonnay
    • Cabernet Franc Rosé
    • Cabernet Sauvignon

The current wines are all made by Dane at the winery and the fruit comes from California in AVAs like Monterey and Russian River Valley. I chose the Reserve Flight plus a couple of other wines and all were excellent.

At the end of my tasting, I tried the small bite Rumaki (dates, parmesan, wrapped with applewood bacon). I never had this before, but after the first bite I knew I will be having more! The next time I visit I will make sure I plan on visiting around lunchtime so I can try one of their pizzas.

I highly recommend visiting Untamed Wine Estates in the Hill Country.
