Reddy Vineyards, pioneers of Texas grape growing and winemaking, has proudly grown grapes on their family vineyard since 1997. Dr. Vijay Reddy reflects on his time working with his son, Akhil Reddy, in the vineyard and his family legacy as Father’s Day approaches.
“It’s been 25 years of a challenging journey. I’ve learned so much about the wine and grape growing industry, and I’m so proud of what we have to show for it,” said Dr. Vijay Reddy. “I’m most proud to have my son, Akhil, work alongside me at the vineyard. His support helps me ease into retirement, knowing our family’s legacy of farming will continue on to the 6th generation.”
Vijay moved to America from India in 1971 to get his Masters, along with his Doctorate in Plant and Soil Science. As a 5th generation farmer, his father was his role model. His father was a mentor in the family’s village in India and was the guiding force for Vijay to come to the states to pursue higher education. Vijay brings his family’s expertise to the vineyard. Knowing many factors are in Mother Nature’s hands, he focuses on the aspects he can control in the vineyard to produce award-winning wines.
“Family is at the soul of our vineyard,” added Vijay. “My son and my wife are my closest advisors in the family business, and I’m so proud of the legacy we’ve built.”

Reddy Vineyards has almost 400 acres outside of Brownfield, Texas, with 38 different grape varietals planted. Everything about Reddy Vineyards is authentically Texan, from the grapes to the label on each bottle that tells the Reddy family story. Because the Reddy family is so passionate about Texan-grown grapes, they’ve also included the block number on each bottle so that consumers can trace what they are drinking from the vineyard to their table. Texans can visit the vineyard and the exact blocks where their favorite grapes are grown.
Vijay’s favorite Reddy Vineyards wine is the TNT Tempranillo Blend. “Tempranillo is one of the best grapes to grow in Texas, in my opinion. The Touriga Nacional complements the Tempranillo very well in the blend,” Vijay added.
Celebrate your dad this Father’s Day with a bottle – or two – of Reddy Vineyards wine.
