A winery makes wine and a vineyard grows grapes! Sometimes a winery can have a vineyard where they get their grapes from, but often a vineyard in Texas only grows grapes and then sells them to wineries.

Tejas Winery and Vineyards

September 27, 2019 by Jeff Cope Leave a Comment

Tejas Winery outside

Tejas Winery and Vineyards joins the growing number of wineries who are opening on the popular destination U.S. 290 between Johnson City and Fredericksburg. The winery is owned by Brad and Julie Edwards and opened August 1, 2019.

The winery sits back from the road, so you have to look for the driveway that leads you up to the top of the hill where the winery is situated. Looking around, there is a lot of room to grow and the vineyard will be planted in spring 2020 on four acres. That is just the start of the vineyard and famed viticulturist Penny Adams is the consultant for Tejas Winery and Vineyards.

The large tasting room is also home for the production area of Tejas Winery as it expands. We met co-owner Julie Edwards who helped us with our tasting. You can relax and enjoy your tasting while you sit at the tasting bar. There is a tasting fee and the tastings are poured directly from the bottle. These are the four wines available at the time of our visit while they were poured from sweet to dry:

  • 2018 Sweet Muscat (Texas)
  • 2018 Dry Muscat (Texas)
  • 2016 Tempranillo (Texas)
  • 2015 Souzão (California)

Co-owner Brad Edwards is the winemaker and they look forward to bottling their next wines in January.

Since the winery is still new, they are still trying to decide on things such as what kind of tasting bar to build. For now, though, the tasting bar serves its purpose, and that is to enjoy some wonderful Texas wines.

We look forward to visiting again, and you should make your visit to Tejas Winery soon to discover the same.
