Some wineries start by owning a vineyard and then add a winery. This is exactly what happened to Kim Langston who owns 3 Texans Winery in Temple. She started the 3 Texans Vineyard in 2009 and then this year in January 2019, 3 Texans Winery opened. The winery is a family-run business where daughters Lauryn Austin and Lacie Howell also take part.
The tasting room is in a nice building adjacent to the vineyard. When I visited on a Saturday, a food truck was in the parking lot waiting to serve hungry wine lovers who were enjoying glasses of wine on the side patio with a beautiful view of the vineyard or inside the tasting room.
The first thing I noticed in the tasting room besides the large U-shaped tasting bar was the large selection of items available in the gift shop at the front of the tasting room. As I walked around the tasting room, the selection of items for purchase grew including clothing, shoes, and jewelry available for sale. Besides tasty treats like crackers, breadsticks, pretzels, and meats and cheeses, there is also a large selection of items such as kitchen towels with wine sayings, homemade candles, and other wine accessories. You could spend quite a bit of time walking around looking at the shop while sipping on a glass of wine.
In the tasting room is an adjoining conference room with a large table ready for those business meetings. But now it was time now to head to the tasting bar and sip on some wine. While seated at the tasting bar, I looked over the menu. For a tasting fee, I had the chance to select five wines for my tasting. You can also purchase glasses after the tasting of your favorite wine. I selected my five wines and the tastings were poured with a measured pourer. Depending on what you select, the tastings are poured from sweetest to driest wine.
To supplement 3 Texans Winery’s own wines, they currently offer wines from other Texas wineries: Georgetown Winery, Thirsty Mule Winery & Vineyard, and Texas Legato. There is only one wine currently offered that is not 100% Texas. Chocolate and crackers are available to cleanse your palate between tastings.
These are the wines available for tasting at the time of my visit:
- Blush (sweet) – made with red and white grapes
- 2016 Viognier (semi-sweet) – Texas High Plains
- 2016 Estate Malbec (dry)
- 2016 Estate Tempranillo (dry)
- 2016 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon (dry)
- Semi-sweet Sangria – made fresh every week
June Ritterbusch of Salado Winery Co. is the winemaker for 3 Texans Winery producing their 100% Texas wines.
