The D’vine Wine Straw and Aerator arrived in a velour sack inside a plastic case. Impressive. The straw itself is a bit strange looking at first. It is bigger than a normal straw but flattened a bit. It is an “S” shape with a hole in the very bottom of the S. This helps to pull every last bit of wine from the glass.
The information accompanying the straw stated that the design of the straw would prevent staining of teeth from red wines. I can see that being the case. “The streamlined design pours wine past your teeth and directly onto your palate,” the information sheet stated. It also stated it would add aeration to the wine. So, it was time to test it out.
Being a mostly white wine drinker, that is what I had at my house for my initial testing. At first, I thought it was a bit hard to drink out of, but it is a retraining process. I couldn’t really tell that much difference in the Pinot Grigio I was drinking as far as aeration was concerned, but it certainly did work as far as getting the last smidgen bit from the glass!
I then carried it with me to the Triple D Winery and Restaurant to try it out on the Triple D Dolcetto. I could certainly tell there was additional aeration when you try it with the straw and then without. There was less of an edge to it. It seemed softer, so to speak.
I offered the owner Mary Wilmeth a chance to try the straw. In her words, “It does enhance the flavor a bit with the aeration. I can tell a difference. It was smoother tasting. It is a bit strange looking, but I can see it being a great stocking stuffer item or an additional gift item in a wine basket.”
So, all in all, I would give it a good thumbs up for what it states it will do:
- Stop teeth discoloration from dark wines
- Add aeration to the drink
- Reducing waste by not using disposable straws
And I will add in, I think those so called “smoker lines” that women worry so much about are lessened by the design of the straw.
The D’Vine! Wine Straw can be purchased online through the dvinewinestraw.com website or Amazon. More information can be obtained on their Facebook page. This is a Texas based company and they have been in the development of the Wine Straw for several years.
Will I use it again? Sure! Why not! It has a fun and unique design that is bound to start conversation and it enhances the flavor. It does exactly what the info states it will do. What’s not to like!
