Armadillo’s Leap Winery opened on U.S. 290 in December 2015 and it did not take long when the tasting room on Main Street opened in October 2016. This makes two convenient locations to visit and taste the wines from the sister winery of Pedernales Cellars.
I visited the tasting room on Main Street and it has a long tasting bar where you can enjoy your tasting. There is a tasting fee for six wines and you get to keep the complimentary etched crystal wine glass. I learned the same wines are available at both locations, which definitely makes it easy to buy a bottle of Armadillo’s Leap Winery wine.
These wines were available during my visit:
- 2015 Viognier
- 2015 Pinot Grigio
- Texas Mourvèdre
- BFF Blend (Montepulciano, Tempranillo, Aglianico)
- Muscat
- Yaaas! (Moscato sparkling wine and the only non-Texas wine)
Since it was near the holidays, they also offered a tasting of the popular Stonewall Glögg. I asked about BFF knowing the common abbreviation usually stands for Best Friends Forever, but this is Armadillo’s Leap Winery. Hence, their abbreviation stands for Banded Friends Forever. Get it? Banded like an armadillo.
Armadillo’s Leap gives winemaker David Kuhlken the opportunity to experiment with other varieties of grapes. There is a wine club where you can sign up and get to enjoy his experiments. A nice gift shop is available where you can buy wine accessories, clothing, and many other items.
Next time you are in the Fredericksburg area, make a point to stop at one of the two locations for Armadillo’s Leap Winery.
