Since 2001, Flat Creek Estate in Marble Falls, TX has been producing high quality Texas wines. The property is nestled in the heart of the Texas Hill Country and the views from the tasting room and winery are stunning. After all, this is the Texas Hill Country, what is not to love right? The wines produced at Flat Creek range from dry reds and whites, to sweet dessert and port style wines, and there are even bubbles in the wine program. Texas Wine Lover recently got our hands on a noteworthy bottle of wine, the 2012 Reserve Super Texan and here is the review.
This wine is a small allocation of top-notch red wine from the Flat Creek wine program, and the blend is mostly modeled after the Super Tuscan style of wines, being mostly Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon. The Super Texan, some may argue, is the bottling that put Flat Creek Estate “on the map.” In the case of the Reserve Super Texan, only the best 5% of the barrels were selected, then blended together and aged for an extended period to create a complex and well rounded wine. In the glass this wine pours a garnet with an orange hue at the rim. The aromas flood the senses with notes of blackberries, blueberry, earl grey tea, and saddle leather. The palate confirms the nose nearly identically to me. This wine offers a pleasurable nuanced earthiness, while maintaining a fruit forward profile.

At the end of the day, I can confidently recommend this wine. This is not a big monster of a red, such as the 2010 Syrah from Flat Creek, but this bottle is an enjoyable, complex, medium bodied red wine to be enjoyed with heavy pasta dishes, or with a delicious slice of pizza.
Sip, savor, and enjoy my fellow aficionados.
