          A winery makes wine and a vineyard grows grapes! Sometimes a winery can have a vineyard where they get their grapes from, but often a vineyard in Texas only grows grapes and then sells them to wineries.

23rd Annual Gulf Coast Grape Grower Field Day to be held on Feb. 6

Red grape clusterThe 23rd annual Gulf Coast Grape Grower Field Day will be February 6 at the Agricultural Society Hall, 13035 Hall Road, located in Cat Spring. This is an all-day event providing educational seminars for growers provided by Austin County Grape Grower Committee and the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension.

The event starts with registration at 8:30 a.m. and concludes at 4:30 p.m. The current agenda is as follows:

8:30 – 9:00 Registration

9:00 – 9:10 Introduction and Announcements by Philip Shackelford – Texas A&M AgriLife Extension

9:10 – 9:40 Training Systems for Blanc Du Bois by Fritz Westover – Westover Vineyard Advising, LLC

9:40 – 10:10 Cotton Root Rot by Sheila McBride – Texas A&M AgriLife Extension

10:30 – 10:50 Measuring Yeast Assimilable Nitrogen (YAN) by Dr. Greg Cobb – Texas A&M University

10:50 – 11:10 Impact of Foliar Urea Applications on YAN by Fritz Westover – Westover Vineyard Advising, LLC

11:10 – 11:30 Addressing YAN in the Winery by Dr. Justin Scheiner – Texas A&M AgriLife Extension

11:30 – 12:00 Pierce’s Disease Tolerant Grape Variety Trial by Andrew Labay – Texas A&M AgriLife Extension

1:00 – 1:10 Texas Wine & Grape Growers Association Update by Jon Bowden – Region 3 Vineyard Director

1:10 – 1:50 Fruit Quality by Dr. George Ray McEachern – Texas A&M University

1:50 – 2:30 Vineyard Irrigation Strategies by Dr. Ed Hellman – Texas A&M AgriLife Extension

2:50 – 3:30 Interpreting Petiole Test Results by Jim Kamas – Texas A&M AgriLife Extension

3:30 – 4:30 Wine Reception

The event costs $35 per person payable by check, cash, or credit card. The event fee includes lunch and the wine social. Registration and payment is done at the door from 8:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.
