Angelita Vineyard and Winery is located in Angus just outside of Corsicana and is Navarro County’s first vineyard and winery. The winery is owned by Beverly and Rodney Spahn. The winery is managed by Beverly while Rodney is the winemaker and vineyard manager. Rodney W. Spahn is Rodney’s father and the resident vineyard keeper at the age of 77 working the vineyard. The name of the winery Angelita came from the name of Rodney Spahn’s late mother.
Angelita Vineyard and Winery started the vineyard in April, 2010 with 200 vines of Blanc du Bois. They later added another 1,000 Blanc du Bois and 200 Ruby Cabernet vines. There is now a total of three acres of vineyard. During the first two years of the vineyard, they kept it organic and are still trying to keep it organic as much as possible with limited spraying of chemicals to fight ladybugs, nematodes, and grasshoppers. Grasshoppers are an issue and they are using a product called “Nolo Bait” which is a biological insecticide to combat them which they learned from a customer who gardens completely organic and has had success using it.
The winery had their grand opening on July 19, 2014 which was a great success. So much so that one of their wines, Sinful Zin, sold out and unfortunately there is no more available to taste or buy. Angelita Vineyard and Winery has different options available for tasting. You can select from three different tasting flights or $2 per taste. The three flights are for three, four, or five wines and of course each flight increases in price. If you select the five wine flight, you get to keep the logoed wine glass. Tastings are done while standing at the tasting bar which was handmade by Rodney Spahn and decorated by Beverly. The tastings are poured from the uncorked bottles.
These were the wines which were available for tasting at the time of my visit:
- Blanc du Bois – Dry (estate)
- Blanc du Bois – Reserve (estate)
- Blanc du Bois – Semi-Sweet (estate)
- Dolcetto (from Bingham Family Vineyards grapes)
- Legacy (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Petite Sirah)
- American Zinfandel
- Texas Rose (Black Spanish with a touch of Merlot)
This gives five out of seven wines which are from Texas grapes. The other grapes come from California. There is a food menu available such as small and large fruit and cheese plates, herb butter with bread, smoked salmon bruschetta, salad, and tomatoe capresse. There is a small gift shop available with clothing, sangria mixes, and wine accessories.
Events are held at the winery such as ladies gatherings and other private events. They will try to do one big event a month. There was live music at the grand opening and they plan on having more live music events in the future.

A wine club is coming soon and current plans are to announce one new wine every quarter. The winery is located very close to I-45 so it is easy to find. Plan on making a stop when you are driving through the area.
