The 2013 Keels and Wheels Concours d’Elegance show was held at Lakewood Yacht Club on May 4-5. The event featured classic car and vintage wooden boats and benefited Boys & Girls Harbor.
We attended the show on Sunday and upon entering the gate we were introduced to many styles of cars. The majority of the cars were classic cars but there were also some new cars from dealers including beauties such as Mercedes-Benz, Bentley, Cadillac, Ferrari, and we drooled over the Aston Martins including one which was only $330,000.
We arrived at the time the Grand Marshall Al Unser, Jr., Indianapolis 500 champion, was giving autographs so we had to stop by and see him. Al Unser, Jr. won the Indianapolis 500 in 1992 and 1994.
It was then time to make our way through some classic cars to the waterfront to see the vintage wooden boats. There were a lot of boats in the water and also some on dry land and some beautiful yachts were also for sale. We learned people came from around the country and even Canada to participate in the show.
At the Kids Build a Boat exhibit, kids of all ages could help build a pointed bow, Skiff-style boat. The finished boat would be given away to one of the participating builders.
Cars were divided up into different areas such as Ferraris, race cars, Corvettes, Rolls-Royce complete with Grey Poupon, Stutz, etc. There were definitely some very detailed and beautifully restored vehicles.
Alex Rodriguez Mercedes-Benz raffled off a car but unfortunately we didn’t get the phone call. Maybe next year!
We weren’t sure entirely what to expect by attending the show but we really did enjoy our time looking at the exhibits. Next year’s show will be on May 3-4, 2014.
