Becker Vineyards is in Stonewall and is owned by Dr. Richard Becker and Bunny Becker. The winery opened in 1992 and the winery’s tasting room opened June 1996. Bret Perreoud is the general manager. Becker Vineyards new winemaker is Jon Leahy who joined the winery in June 2012.
Becker Vineyards has 21 acres of vineyards in the front of the winery and 25 acres of vineyards in the back of the winery growing 14 different varieties of grapes including Syrah, Petite Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petite Verdot, and Merlot.
Tastings are done while standing at a large square tasting bar. There is a tasting fee for six wines and we were given six tickets along with a keepsake wine glass. We were instructed on how the order of the tasting should proceed and where to drop our tickets for each wine tasted. Tastings are poured from the uncorked bottles with a measured pourer. Crackers are available to cleanse your palate.
Becker Vineyards produces 177,000 cases of wine a year. They probably have the title of most wine barrels at a Texas winery as they have almost 2,000 barrels, both French and American oak. Becker Vineyards purchases the barrels new and then sells them after three years. They replace one-third of their barrels with new oak each year.
A gift shop is available which has clothes and wine accessories. Becker Vineyards also has a wine club.
Events such as weddings and live music are held regularly at the winery in a reception hall adjacent to the winery. There is a log cabin built around the 1890s on the estate grounds. The winery itself is located in a 19th century German stone barn reproduction. In 1998 Becker Vineyards planted three acres of lavender behind the winery. They use the lavender to make potpourris, soaps, and oils for sale at the winery.
Becker is on the Texas Hill Country Wine Trail and the Wine Road 290 Wine Trail.
Becker was one of of 5 Hill Country Wineries when we started Texas wine tasting. We have even stayed at the B&B. Becker has some outstanding wines and a few years back they opened up the area behind the original tasting room. The new room is huge and can hold many people. They continue to grow and so does their wines. Becker is a first class Texas winery and its always a treat to visit them when we are down there.
