My wife and I are visiting the Austin area in May. I have been looking up where we can taste / drink some Texas wine in the limited (1 day) that we will have in the area. I have been VERY disappointed so far in that EVERY wine bar and food establishment I have seen so far has world wines and California wines. We currently live within 2 hours of Napa / Sonoma and live in an area that has a growing wine industry so the LAST thing we want to taste / drink is more California wines, please help.
I will contact my Austin friends and see if we can get an answer for you. There are a few good wineries which aren’t too far from Austin too.
Update: Here is a post of great wine bars in Austin from one of my friends:

Hearing from two more friends said that your best bet if you are in Austin for one day and want to taste Texas wines, either drive out to Jack Allen’s Restaurant that has several on their list or drive to the famous Salt Lick BBQ and they also carry lots of Texas wines.
How is the food in those locations? I have heard of Salt Lick BBQ from a co-worker. What about places to stay in close proximity of those places? I know 1 day isn’t much but we are already talking about a true visit to explore some of the hill country wineries. How is it at the end of July beginning of August? Any wineries a “must see” and experience?
I have been to Salt Lick and the food is great. I haven’t back to Jack Allen’s but have heard that’s excellent too. I can’t really recommend places to stay. The best thing to do is look at the locations and determine what price hotel/B&B you would like to stay at. Visiting the hill country wineries is great anytime of the year. Check out the Texas Hill Country Wine Trail website for information on the different wineries.
