Rising Star Vineyards – Salado

http://www.risingstarvineyards.com

Rising Star Vineyards has two locations. The main location and winery is in Rising Star and a tasting room is in Salado. The winery is owned by Michael and Vicki Oubre and Michael is the winemaker.

The Rising Star winery opened in 2006. The tasting room in Salado opened in May 2011 which makes the Rising Star wines more accessible since it is located along I-35. When we first visited the Salado location, Vicki Oubre was operating the tasting room. This post is about our visit at that time so things may have changed. We tried visiting recently for an updated view but the tasting room did not open on time and we had to leave after waiting for 30 minutes.

Tastings are done while sitting at the tasting bar. The tastings are poured from the uncorked bottles. There was no tasting fee at the time and we were able to taste all their wines. Food is available to cleanse your palate between tastings.

All the grapes used in Rising Star’s wines are from Texas. The Rising Star Vineyards label is 100% estate wines while their Dodd’s Creek Wines label is for grapes not from their vineyard.

Rising Star Salado - gift shop

There is a small gift shop in the tasting room.

Since our initial visit, a cheese deli and bistro is now available. Cheeses come from Texas such as Veldhuizen, Brazos Valley, Latte Da Dairy, and Watonga. Soups, salads, sandwiches, and pasta dishes are available to eat and you can eat in the cheesery, garden area, or tasting room.

The Salado location is on the San Gabriel Wine Trail.

Fiesta Winery – Fredericksburg

Fiesta Winery in Bend opened a tasting room on the main street of Fredericksburg in September 2012. Before leaving Fredericksburg one weekend, I stopped in to visit the tasting room.

Surprisingly co-owner Sally Baxter was behind the tasting bar. I was not expecting to see Sally there since she is usually at the winery and she said she just happened to be there. David and Cynthia Ritchie moved to Fredericksburg and are the General Managers of the tasting room.

It had been a few months since we had visited Fiesta Winery but Sally somehow remembered what we had tasted while there and told me what was new since our visit. One new wine was Happy Trails which is a Chardonnay with hints of peach. It is made from non-Texas grapes and had that unoaked Chardonnay taste with the peaches which enhanced the flavor. A bottle came home with me.

There is a tasting fee for five tastings which includes a complimentary wine glass. If you purchase three bottles, your tasting is free. I enjoyed tasting the new wines in the new setting.

There is a nice gift shop in the tasting room with clothing, crackers, wine accessories, and other food items. The location of the tasting room is near some of our favorite stores in Fredericksburg so we will enjoy stopping by whenever we are in town.

Wine Trail Events

I recently published a post about spring and summer wine festivals. A comment was added from Bruce Anderson of Sunset Winery that I should list wine trail events. What a great idea! A lot of Texas wineries are on wine trails and they often have events throughout the year which feature different themes, special activities/wines at each winery, etc. It makes it easy to visit a number of wineries which are in close proximity to each other. Bottom line, they are fun!

So now there is a new page to the website where you should be able to get all your wine trail event information. When you come back to this website, just select the Texas Wineries menu and the Texas Wine Trail Events menu item.

I will keep it updated throughout the year as new events are announced for each wine trail. Enjoy and hit a wine trail today!
