Texas Hill Country Wineries Wine Trail Grows

Texas Hill Country Wineries

Texas Hill Country – Last week the current 32 member wineries of the Texas Hill Country Wineries association voted to add 3 new winery members and a 2nd location tasting room for an existing member. This brings the total of association members to 36.

Wines include Chardonnay, Shade Tree Blush, Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Edelzwicker. Hye Meadow is owned by Mike & Denise Batek, winemaker is Jeff Ivy. www.HyeMeadow.com

Wedding Oak Winery, located in historic downtown San Saba, Texas, produces Texas-grown wines, blending Old World traditions with New World flair. The addition of these new members confirms that the Hill Country is a growing wine destination and the association will continue to support this growth through events, marketing, education and community partnerships.

Wine Trail Events

I recently published a post about spring and summer wine festivals. A comment was added from Bruce Anderson of Sunset Winery that I should list wine trail events. What a great idea! A lot of Texas wineries are on wine trails and they often have events throughout the year which feature different themes, special activities/wines at each winery, etc. It makes it easy to visit a number of wineries which are in close proximity to each other. Bottom line, they are fun!

So now there is a new page to the website where you should be able to get all your wine trail event information. When you come back to this website, just select the Texas Wineries menu and the Texas Wine Trail Events menu item.

I will keep it updated throughout the year as new events are announced for each wine trail. Enjoy and hit a wine trail today!

Singing Water - Dick Holmberg

Dick Holmberg

Singing Water Vineyards is located in Comfort and is owned by Dick and Julie Holmberg. They first started a vineyard in 1998 planting Merlot and they were bonded as a winery in 2004. At that time they were winery number 56 in the state of Texas. There are different numbers heard today as to how many wineries there are in Texas but numbers range from 230-270 eight years later.

Singing Water Vineyard’s first commercial wines were sold in May of 2005. In 2005 a historic Texas Hill Country barn was moved to the property and restored to become the tasting room. A second vineyard was planted with Pinot Grigio and Syrah.

When visiting the Comfort area, Singing Water Vineyards is always a winery which we need to visit. We had a very interesting tour of the winery and production facility the first time we visited the winery and learned quite a few things.

On our last visit, we were pleased to have Ann Holmberg, daughter of Dick and Julie Holmberg, be our tasting guide. The first thing we noticed was the winery had expanded and the rooms rearranged a little. Ann told us they try to expand every year if possible.

Singing Water Vineyards tries to use 100% Texas grapes if possible. If they are unable to use Texas grapes, they get the rest from California. Singing Water Vineyards produces 2800-3000 cases of Texas wine a year.

Live music is held once a month when there is good weather. Other events are held such as local artist shows. The winery offers scenic grounds with picnic areas and the tasting room and winery porch overlook the creek. In times of good weather, there is a flowing creek hence the name of the winery. Otherwise during drought periods, the creek dries up like one time when we visited.

The gift shop has some nice wine accessories and there is a wine club available. Singing Water Vineyards is on the Texas Hill Country Wine Trail and the Guadalupe Valley Wine Trail.

When you are in Comfort visiting the few wineries located there, make sure you take the winding road to the winery and enjoy the hospitality of Singing Water Vineyards.
