Salt Lick Cellars

26 April 2012

http://saltlickcellars.com

Salt Lick Cellars is located in Driftwood next to the famous Salt Lick BBQ Restaurant. The winery is owned by Scott Roberts and Jay Knepp is the winemaker and vineyard manager.

Scott Roberts planted the first vines in 2006 which was a total of 35 acres of different grape varieties including Tempranillo, Mourvèdre, Sangiovese and Syrah. Today five acres are present at the winery and the rest of the vineyard is by Onion Creek near Driftwood.

Salt Lick - outside

Salt Lick Cellars bottled their first wines in 2008 and in 2009 the tasting room was built. Since the restaurant is a bring your own alcoholic beverage restaurant, customers can visit Salt Lick Cellars next door to buy wine or beer to bring to the restaurant. We have enjoyed the restaurant before and have stopped in the Cellars to get some drinks for the restaurant. One of our last visits was our infamous camera dropping incident but we got the pleasure of meeting Alphonse Dotson and his wife Martha Cervantes. They make a fantastic Muscat Canelli under the label of Dotson-Cervantes which is produced by Fall Creek Vineyards.

When we visited Duchman Family Winery one time, they had their bottling machine set up with Salt Lick Cellars wine labels. Duchman Family Winery used to make Salt Lick Cellars Texas wines but now that Salt Lick Cellars has their own vineyard, Duchman Family Winery only bottles for them.

Salt Lick - outside

We arrived at Salt Lick Cellars the last time and there were a few people at the tasting bar. We found a location to do a tasting and we then met Jay Knepp who handled our tasting. We stood at the tasting bar and there is a tasting fee for 5 wines and they are poured from the bottle. The wine bottles use both corks and screw caps. Wines included for tasting are Salt Lick Cellars wines plus other wineries such as Duchman Family Winery and La Diosa Cellars.

Crackers are available for cleansing your palate and you can buy cheese plates and various nuts to enjoy.

Jay explained they use 30-35% Texas grapes. They get California fruit for two out of their ten wines. Salt Lick Cellars produces about 7,000 cases of Texas wine a year. Various wineries help with producing, bottling, and labeling including McPherson Cellars, William Chris Vineyards, Fall Creek Vineyards, and the aforementioned Duchman Family Winery. McPherson Cellars makes Salt Lick Cellar’s two white wines.

A gift shop with wine accessories is present in the small tasting room. We also learned you can order food from the restaurant “to go” and eat your meal outside the winery.

Next time you are in the Driftwood area and want some delicious barbecue, stop by the Salt Lick Restaurant and Salt Lick Cellars. Even if you aren’t hungry, stop by Salt Lick Cellars itself to enjoy their wines.

Wineries Can Close so Drink Local Might Help

19 April 2012

Unfortunately it’s a fact of life. Businesses open and close all the time due to various reasons. The winery business is not exempt from this process. In the effort to maintain the “latest and greatest” list of all Texas wineries, in addition to adding new wineries which are opening, we also have to update the lists for those wineries that have closed.

Sometimes it is known why a winery has closed and other times it is not disclosed. Perhaps there may have been personal reasons or perhaps there just weren’t enough customers buying their Texas wine. With the DrinkLocalWine 2012 conference next week, it has brought to my mind how we all should support our local wineries as much as we can. Maybe our little effort of supporting our local winery might help them remain in business.

Khatter Vineyards - sign

Khatter Vineyards

http://www.khattervineyards.com

The picture above was taken when we visited Khatter Vineyards before opening hours. Unfortunately now it represents the winery’s state since their website now says they are closed.

Khatter Vineyards was our first experience of visiting a boutique winery located in a neighborhood subdivision in Parker. A small vineyard was in the house’s half-acre lot and a building had been built next to the house which housed the tasting room. We had a nice visit with owner Carolyn Khatter and enjoyed her Texas wines. Khatter Vineyards was on the Munson Wine Trail.

Lost Creek Winery

http://lostcreekvineyard.com

Lost Creek Winery unfortunately had their loss due to Mother Nature. The winery was owned by David Brinkman in Sunrise Beach.

On June 26, 2007, floods reaching 30 feet tall invaded Lost Creek’s tasting room. The flood destroyed almost everything in the building and washed away thousands of cases of wine and inventory.

In January 2008, David Brinkman started rebuilding on higher ground and in June they were finished with the lower level and reopened to the public. Now Lost Creek Winery is primarily the Tree House Bistro which is a restaurant. They still serve their original wines and wine from around the world with a full bar. Be sure to stop at their restaurant when you are near.

Lost Creek Vineyards & Tasting Room & Gourmet Foods

In the meantime, Lost Creek opened Lost Creek Vineyards & Tasting Room & Gourmet Foods in Johnson City. We stopped there a couple times on the way back from Fredericksburg. They sold other Texas wines along with sauces, oils, and other food products. When we drove by last week we were going to visit and take some photos but unfortunately they have now closed. The closure must have been recent as there is still a wine barrel by the curb with Lost Creek wine bottles glued to the top.

D’Vine Wine of Austin

When I visited Lakeview Winery, I was also planning on visiting nearby D’Vine Wine of Austin. I’m glad I visited Lakeview Winery first as the owners told me D’Vine Wine of Austin had just closed. They were not certain why but it is unfortunate another winery had closed its doors.

Help Us Help You: As mentioned previously, we are trying to maintain the latest list of Texas wineries on the website. The above closed wineries are still listed on a lot of locations on the Internet. If you see any new ones we do not have or unfortunately hear of any that are now closed, please let us know so we can update the lists. By helping us keep the correct information, we can all help one another learn about new wineries to visit and ones which have closed.

Sullivan’s Steakhouse Bar Menu and Steak & Cake

18 April 2012

We got a chance to meet Sullivan’s Steakhouse General Manager Zaidi Syed at the Houston location for an introduction to the restaurant’s new Bar Menu, Steak & Cake, and their custom blended Private Reserve Sullivan’s Cabernet.

Sullivan's Steakhouse - CabernetWe do not usually eat a lot so sitting at a bar eating dinner is perfectly fine for us. With Sullivan’s new extensive Bar Menu, you will end up with a choice of high quality food. We were able to taste some delicious lamb sliders, Scottish smoked salmon, Mediterranean flatbread, and more. All were served with Sullivan’s own custom blended Private Reserve Cabernet from Napa Valley made by winemaker Bob Foley, a real rock star with his own rock band.

Next up was a sampling of the new Steak & Cake which is an eight-ounce Filet Mignon with a four-ounce crab cake. The steak was tender, the crab was delicious, and both paired well with Flora Springs Winery & Vineyards Trilogy. The Steak & Cake is a special throughout April at the restaurant.

Sullivan's Steakhouse - Steak & CakeApril 26th is a Frog’s Leap Winery dinner featuring Frog’s Leap wine. We tasted the Frog’s Leap Merlot which during the dinner will be paired with a Texas Chili Crusted Duck Breast.

If you are interested in any of Sullivan’s delicious food and delectable wine, please contact them at www.sullivanssteakhouse.com.

Texas Wineries with Lodging

24 January 2012

When visiting Texas wineries, one of the most fun things to do is actually stay overnight at a winery. A lot of times the winery may have live music at night which lets you enjoy the music with a bottle of wine and not have to worry about driving home or to the local hotel. How nice it is to just walk to the winery’s lodging to stay the night.

We have stayed overnight at a couple winery’s and have enjoyed every minute. In our last trip to Fredericksburg we were considering staying at a winery, but the ones we were aware of were already booked. Hence the birth of this post which is what Texas wineries actually have lodging.

Doing a little research of websites and knowledge from visiting wineries, we found the Texas wineries which have lodging. If we have missed one, please let us know and we will gladly add it to the list so everyone will know it is available. The following are listed in alphabetical order within each region we have on the website of hopefully all the wineries in Texas.

Sandstone Cellars Winery

9 January 2012

http://www.sandstonecellarswinery.com

Sandstone Cellars Winery is located in Mason, north of Fredericksburg. The winery is owned by Scott Haupert and Manny Silerio with Don Pullum as the winemaker. Since Don was mentioned in the previous blog post about Junction Rivers Winery, it was only fitting Sandstone Cellars Winery is the next winery to spotlight.

Sandstone - Don Pullum

Don Pullum

In 1998 Don Pullum was looking for a place to grow grapes in Texas. He was a former venture capitalist and banker, and decided he wanted to grow grapes and make wine. He spent almost a year looking for property for the vineyard, and Mason had everything he wanted with the right soil, water, and being in a growth direction near Fredericksburg. He planted the first vineyard in Mason County called Akashic Vineyard. Now there are nine grape growers in Mason County with 150 acres of vines.

Sandstone - Scott Haupert

Scott Haupert

Don planted his first acre with Grenache, Primitivo, Sangiovese, and Mourvèdre which Don loves. A neighbor then planted at Don’s suggestion Touriga. Don said, “I have become enamored as a winemaker with Touriga.” As a result you will find Touriga used in many of Sandstone Cellars wines in some percentage.

Also in 1998, Scott Haupert and Manny Silerio being best friends while attending college in San Antonio opened Santos Taqueria (http://www.santostaqueria.com) in an old gas station building in Mason. This is not your typical Tex-Mex restaurant because the food is made the Old World way. The reason for this is because Manny’s mother, Santos Silerio, originally from Durango, Mexico, runs the restaurant using her recipes along with Manny’s sister.

Scott and Manny met Don and the rest you could say is history. With the restaurant needing parking space, they bought the building next door for parking space and then thought perhaps a winery might work to serve the needs of the community. So with winemaker Don Pullum they started the boutique winery of Sandstone Cellars Winery in 2004.

On our last visit I had pre-arranged to meet Don Pullum (@akashicvineyard) at the winery. He handled our tasting and gave us a very informative history of the winery and Mason County. We also got to meet Scott Haupert again and eventually met Manny Silerio.

Sandstone - OutsideThere is a tasting fee for whatever wines are available which people want to taste. You stand at the tasting bar in the winery and the uncorked Texas wines are poured from the bottle. Crackers are available to cleanse your palate.

All of Sandstone Cellars Texas wine is made from 100% Texas fruit from Mason County. Most of their red wines are chilled because the proper temperature for serving most red wines is between 55 and 65 degrees. Even when they go to festivals they take ice to keep their wines in so the wine is served at the right temperature. Sandstone Cellars Winery only makes red wines so to complement their wines, they sell other Texas wines which they particularly like.

Sandstone - insideDuring our tasting, Don showed us the production facility, a room located in the back of the winery. The stainless steel tanks and oak barrels are kept there and with the 300 square feet of production space, Sandstone Cellars Winery produces 500 cases a year. This is obviously big enough to handle their award winning Texas wines.

Don explained how the first wine he did was oaked for nine months but then he changed the style. He is now keeping about 50 percent in oak for three or four months and 50 percent in stainless tanks. The stainless keeps the fruit character and the oak gives the oak flavors and adds complexity. He then swaps them out with another varietal before he starts blending.

Besides helping Junction Rivers Winery as mentioned earlier, Don Pullum also consults with Torre de Pietra Winery winemaker Ken Maxwell on his wines.

We discussed the labels for Sandstone Cellars Winery. The backdrop for the primary labels is the painting “Kindred Spirits” done by local artist Bill Worrell. Another Bill Worrell painting called “My Way” is used on their Port style dessert wine. Both paintings hang in the winery. Also on the labels are the grapes used and the percentages.

Sandstone - Manny Silerio

Manny Silerio

Instead of names, the wines are labeled with roman numerals. I asked Don about the naming of their wines. Don said, “Scott, Manny, and I were talking about how we may do different blends every year, so we’re going to have to come up with a bunch of proprietary names because every bottle is going to be different. We don’t want to call it something and it’s going to change every year. We came up with 10 or 11 names and checked them out on the computer and they were all taken. Manny got frustrated and said, ‘Why don’t we just number them?’ I thought, ‘That’s brilliant Manny. Let’s do that.’ So that’s what we’re doing because we’re changing the blend with every wine.”

A gift shop is present in the winery with art, pottery, and sculptures also by Bill Worrell. They are in the process of putting together a wine club.

Don brought us to the building next door to the winery which is the second oldest building in Mason and was Lucia Holmes house. It was a Sunday house for farmers. Lucia Holmes wrote a diary which was published which talks about the Indian fights, cowboy shootouts, and life in Mason, Texas when it was part of the Wild West in the 1870′s. The building is now a wonderful wine bar for the winery. The rooms in the house have tables where patrons can enjoy their wine. Customers often walk from the wine bar to the winery and then to Santos Taqueria on the other side of the winery. The wine bar sells wines by the glass and local foods like cheese plates.

We thank Don, Scott, and Manny for our excellent visit at Sandstone Cellars Winery. Next time you are in Fredericksburg, set some time aside to take the short drive north to Mason and visit the winery, wine bar, and Santos Taqueria.
